What color is water? The classic answer of course, is blue. But let me ask you: What color is the water that comes out of your faucet? what color are the streams, rivers or lakes in your town? When have you truly seen blue water?
Crater Lake is famous for it's deep blue hue, which is certainly obvious from the many viewpoints up on the crater rim. But when you get down to water level, and take a boat out to the middle of the 6 mile wide lake, the blueness becomes surreal, mesmerizing, almost unbelievable. At nearly 2,000 feet deep, and with some of the most pure H₂O in the world, the short wavelength blue light from the sky penetrates deep into the lake, then scatters back to the surface, making the lake more blue than the sky itself.
